But the RWD Long Range Polestar 2 is as close as I’ve come to pulling the trigger. There’s no shame if you’ve never heard of Polestar yet. But here’s everything you need to know to have the inside scoop on this growing electric car brand.

The duel motor variant is rated at 400 kW (544 hp) and will do km/h in 3.8 seconds. The single motor version has 200 kW and will take 7.1 seconds to get to 100km/h. The Polestar 2 isn’t quite as practical as a crossover would be for family duty, but it works. The interior draws from the Tesla minimalist playbook, but it’s decently spacious. Thanks in part to the added height of the battery below the floor, the Deuce offers a good ride height for easy entering and exiting. I was able to fit my kids’ car seats in the back without an issue, and the Polestar 2’s quasi-hatch styling at the rear makes for a capacious trunk.

In-person, the Polestar 4 is a bit odd-looking, but I think generally it’s a sharp-looking car. As is the trend with many modern EVs, it can be hard to gauge the physical size of the 4 in pictures; is it Honda Civic-sized? Did Polestar just decide to fill in the rear window of a normal sedan and pretend like it’s a crossover?

The 4, along with the larger and more luxurious 3, will both go on sale this year and should be in Ireland by the summer, or at least the late summer. They are critical models for this young brand, which so far has built its reputation and sales entirely on one model, the very obviously Volvo-based Polestar 2. We’ll see when the Polestar 4 officially goes on sale in 2024. Pricing isn’t official yet, but at an expected $60,000 starting price, the car faces a lot of competition from EVs that don’t have as many hate-it-or-love-it design choices. Polestar is, really, really desperate to prove to everyone it isn’t Volvo.

Who owns Polestar?

The Wagooner S’s tall, blocky styling will likely mean a range rather closer to the 600-odd-km of the Polestar 4, but it will certainly be a contender. No sooner has Porsche revealed its new all-electric Macan SUV than Polestar – the Volvo spin-off that very much wants to be considered a rival to Porsche – has announced an Irish price for its Macan-rivalling 4. That gets you the single-motor long-range model which combines 272hp with a claimed one-charge range of up to 610km. So, here we have a good EV that’s affordable, comes from a solid brand and sounds fun to drive on paper. I’ve been looking to put an electric car in my family’s garage for a while, but I’ve been turned off by the prices.

Polestar 4

I fell into a good groove with moderate steering heft and Polestar’s one-pedal driving mode, which is less abrupt than other EVs’ version. The suspension is a bit stiff on bumpy pavement, but the bumps merely register, rather than jostle your jowels. Whether you’re in it for a long-haul commute or just doing short errands, the Polestar 2 RWD proves an eager companion. It’s not a car begging you to take it to the limit, but it’s smooth, and the extra power (even with access to it reduced by a cold battery) is more than adequate.

How we build a Polestar

Both variants have a 100 kWh CATL Nickle-manganese-colbalt battery pack. WLTP range single motor is 610 km and 580 km on the dual motor. Polestar says production is planned for mid-year with first deliveries expected from August. With an impressive drivetrain and new battery pack, the entry level Long range Single motor variant starts at $81,500 and the Long Range Duel Motor from $93,500.

I left the aforementioned coffee shop with 90 miles of range; after driving 1.8 miles home in the chill, the estimate was 70 miles. I don’t need or want a vehicle that’s going to light my hair on fire at this stage in my life. The Polestar 2 is efficient, handles well, does little that’s annoying on the driving front and meets me at my level.
